Heating efficiency begins with well maintained equipment. Observe safety. Always turn the furnace off before attempting maintenance or repair. This holds true even for simple tasks like changing filters.
Clean air filters strain grit and lint from household air before it reaches the heating chamber. Clogged filters hamper air flow and lose their cleaning ability.
Inspect your air filters monthly. Change or clean them if they need it. You’ll find that filters need cleaning most frequently during dry or dusty weather. Clean foam-type filters by washing in mild detergent. Prolong the life of fiberglass filters by vacuuming them every week or two, removing accumulated dirt.
Always install fresh filters at the beginning of the heating season. Remember when replacing a spun-glass filter: orient the filter as indicated by the arrow on the filter frame. Dirt slips through to the heating chamber if you put filter in backward.
